Guru Yoga
In the Dzogchen tradition taught by Chögyal Namkhai Norbu, Guru Yoga (often published as Guruyoga) is the fundamental and most essential practice. Rather than viewing the Guru as an external deity or ordinary person, Guru Yoga means merging your own mind with the primordial state of the teacher.
Core Meaning in Dzogchen
• The Real Nature: The teaching states that the condition of the Buddha or Dharmakaya coincides with your own deep nature, meaning there is no need to look for it outside yourself.
• Instant Presence: Guru Yoga is the practice of returning to the state of rigpa (pure, non-dual awareness) or instant presence that was first introduced to you directly by your master.
• The Essential Bridge: Just as an electrical current requires a connection to turn on a light, Guru Yoga acts as the vital spark that activates and sustains contemplation.
Essential introduction to Guruyoga by Namkhai Norbu is the book Guruyoga.
1. General Teachings: An explanation of Guru Yoga, its meaning, and how it applies to the three aspects of the path: view (tawa), meditation (gompa), and behavior (chodpa).
2. Practical Methods: Specific Guru Yoga practices utilized within the International Dzogchen Community for methods introducing the rigpa state, and instructions related to worldwide transmissions.
Transmission and Practice Requirements
• Direct Introduction: In the Dzogchen Community, studying and practicing these texts traditionally requires having received a Direct Introduction (transmission) to the state of contemplation from Chögyal Namkhai Norbu or an authorized qualified lineage teacher now Yeshe Silvano Norbu
• Worldwide Transmissions: Chögyal Namkhai Norbu historically granted the transmission for Guru Yoga on specific annual anniversaries in the Dzogchen calendar.
The Vajra Song
The Song of the Vajra is a profound Dzogchen text translated and published by Chögyal Namkhai Norbu, describing the primordial state of mind and the Indestructible Awareness.
The Song of the Vajra is written in a symbolic script rather than a standard literal language, serving as a roadmap to the non-dual state of reality. The verses point to the primordial nature of reality as unborn and uncaused, spontaneously perfect and complete without needing any external construction or fixing. By moving beyond dualistic acceptance and rejection, the teachings describe a continuous, effortless self-liberation of all arising phenomena back into pure awareness.
Yantra Yoga
Yantra Yoga or the Yoga of Movement is an acient system of Tibetan yoga based on the text ”the Union of the Sun and the Moon”, written in the 8th century by the master and translator Vairochana. Chögyal Namkhai Norbu wrote a detailed commentary on the root text and started to transmit this teaching in the West at the beginning of the seventies.
Yantra Yoga is a fundamantal method to integrate the profound essence of the Dzogchen Teaching in the three doors (body, voice and mind) of the practitioner. Through positions and movements combined with breathing one’s energy is coordinated and harmonized, so as to letting the mind fing the authentic balance and relaxation which is the basis for getting into contemplation.
